Green flash at sunset over the sea

June 5, 2003

As if a band of seahorses
had drawn to a line on the western horizon
and in unbridled fury
unstitched the fabric holding blue to green;
at that point of separation -
when night undoes the day -
a spectacle of orange and red poured out,
spilling into the air, into the sea.
And the sun came down
sinking into the halls of night,
marking the spot of his departure
in a halo of light so emerald green
it took my breath away.
