Ladies, Check the Diamond

April 29, 2003

It's becoming more difficult these days to find a product for sale that doesn't have a politically correct label, such as "Made With Child-Free Labor," "Not Tested on Animals," "Not Cut From a Tropical Forest," etc.

What's next? Diamonds.

Canada's Northwest Territories plans to etch gems sold from its mines with tiny microscopic polar bears. The purpose is to let buyers know that Canada's diamonds don't come from the conflict zones of Africa, where rebels and dictators often sell the stones to finance their war machines.

So the next time a man pops the question to a woman with an engagement ring, she should be sure to have a microscope handy. Mr. Right should not only promise to love and honor. He needs to be stopping wars in Africa as well.
