Editor's note

After speaking with Louise Brockett, publicity director at W.W. Norton, I reported on Oct. 19 that publication of "Darkness in El Dorado" had been delayed to re-edit the text in light of criticism of its controversial claims. Last week, Ms. Brockett offered this clarification: "As with many books, particularly books of an investigative nature, 'Darkness in El Dorado' continued to be updated and fine-tuned between the galley and the finished version, but changes were not made under pressure of criticism. The author is prepared to support everything in his finished book, and the publisher is confident of his ability to do so."
