Hands off the panic button!

September 5, 2000

The adoption of a decimal system by America's stock exchanges is expected to heighten market volatility. But experts say "don't panic," and offer this advice:

*For shorter-term traders: Stick to your own stock "battle plan." Set price goals for your stock, including potential highs and lows. Only buy or sell when your specific targets are met.

*Be wary of unexpected market activity. It could be a speculator's game, attempting to drive the market up or down to make short-term gains - or realize a quick loss.

*For long-term traders: Buy and sell based on company and industry fundamentals, rather than reacting to daily price swings.
