- Senate Governmental Affairs Chairman Fred Thompson, deflecting questions about the possibility of being chosen as George W. Bush's vice presidential running mate. A potential Democratic vice presidential choice, Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, later responded to a similar question by saying, "I embrace the Fred Thompson vow-of-silence policy."
