A moving experience

June 28, 2000

This summer, an estimated 21 million people in the US will seize on longer days and warmer temperatures to move. And while the turmoil of relocating can jangle nerves and test tempers, it can also challenge checkbooks.

On average, homeowners will spend $9,400 on move-related purchases during summer relocation; renters, about $3,700, according to Movecentral.com, a Web site that offers tips for people preparing to move.

For more than one-half of homeowners, those purchases will include new appliances and furniture.

Thirty-five percent of homeowners and 40 percent of renters will buy new bedding. Six out of 10 movers will switch banks, insurance companies, and long-distance telephone plans.
