Adoptathon for pets

Cats and dogs are the world's largest homeless population. On May 6 and 7, more than 2,000 animal-protection groups around the world are holding a nonstop pet adoptathon. Participating countries, such as Australia, Russia, India, the Philippines, South Africa, Bolivia, Morocco, Japan, and the United Kingdom, are following an idea that originated on Long Island, N.Y., six years ago, when the North Shore Animal Protection League found homes for all 525 animals in its shelter over a period of 36 hours. Animal shelters are aiming to top last year's record of 37,000 adopted felines and canines. You can find the nearest adoptathon at www.nsal.org.
