A bungalow named desire

April 26, 2000

At the edge of Key West's Historic Preservation District in Florida, this modest house is commanding an asking price of $1.15 million, according to Sotheby's International Realty in New York. Why the steep price? The great American playwright Tennessee Williams, author of "The Glass Menagerie" and "A Streetcar Named Desire," called it home for 30 years. The grounds include a garden and gazebo, a guest cottage, Williams's writing studio, and a swimming pool inlaid with a "rose tattoo" mosaic.

Potential bidders are said to be attracted to the house's sprawling porch, but disappointed by its lack of a hot tin roof.
