A story on the Clinton administration's efforts to bridge the digital divide ("Political tangle in hardwiring nation," April 19, p. 2) misstated the cost of a program to subsidize phone service for 300,000 native Americans. Estimates indicate it will cost $17 million annually, and amount to less than a penny per month increase in consumers' long-distance bills.

Also, the congressman pushing to dismantle the E-rate subsidy, which provides Internet access to schools and libraries, is W. J. "Billy" Tauzin (R) of Louisiana.
