Putting winter accidents on ice

The battle to contain the elements is gaining traction thanks to a new anti-icing program that keeps snow and ice from freezing on the road surface.

In what amounts to preventive plowing, state and local governments in the US are finding that applying liquid calcium chloride to roadways prior to a snowfall helps snowplows maintain a tire-friendly surface.

The accident-preventing treatment is likely to gain ground because it also saves taxpayers money.
