Austria's protests

February 14, 2000

Thousands of demonstrators gathered to protest against the new coalition government between Jrg Haider's right-wing Freedom Party and the conservative People's Party in downtown Vienna on Saturday. They occupied statues, with flags and banners unfurled, in front of the parliament building. Meanwhile, the European Union holds its first ministers meeting today since member-state Austria admitted the far-right party into the government. Vienna is expected to seek its partners' understanding.
