Kids book awards

Christopher Curtis, author of "Bud, Not Buddy" (reviewed Sept. 23, 1999), won this year's Newbery Award from the American Library Association on Monday. The novel, published by Delacorte, follows 10-year-old Bud on a search for his father during the Depression.

Simms Taback won the Caldecott Medal for the illustrations in "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" (Viking), a Yiddish folk tale about a resourceful tailor who transforms a worn-out coat into smaller and smaller garments.

Walter Myers, author of "Monster" (HarperCollins), was named the first winner of the Printz Award for excellence in literature for young adults. Mr. Myers's novel tells the emotionally charged story of a 16-year-old arrested for murder.
