Correction

Words were dropped from two page 1 stories on Dec. 21.

In the article about the Rus-sian elections, the first sentence on page 8 should be: "The prime minister wasn't on the ballot Sunday, but gave his public blessings to Unity, a party created to give Mr. Putin a parliamentary base."

In the story about Afghanistan, a sentence in the first paragraph on page 9 should be: "(I didn't want to look like the clean-shaven Soviets, so I stopped shaving.)"

In a Dec. 15 story on the world's choke points, Harlan Ullman was identified incorrectly on page 3. He works for the Center for Naval Analysis.
