No N.Y. free lunch

November 3, 1999

New Yorkers spend $33.17 per meal to eat out versus $23.84 elsewhere in the US - and they tip better, too. But female diners don't get their money's worth, a Zagat survey shows. Eighty percent of those who participated in the survey said they think men are treated better in restaurants than women. Female diners get poorer seating and slower service. In mixed company, men are targeted for lavish service, since the restaurant staff sees them as the primary check payers.
