Pumpkins with personalities

July 14, 1999

If you've planted pumpkins, here's a way to include kids in gardening fun and also get a head start on Halloween. "Magic carving" is a cool perk for families with pumpkin patches. While the fruit is still small - about the size of a softball - make shallow cuts or etch markings about 1/8 inch deep into the rind. You could draw a self-portrait, Halloween monster, a name, or an intricate design. As the pumpkin grows, the cuts will expand, and your growing artistry will be a fine addition to your front steps.
