Rescuing turkeys from the table

In the Nov. 18 issue, we told readers how they could "adopt" live turkeys to save them from becoming the centerpiece of the holiday dining table. More than 2,500 birds were rescued - an increase of several hundred over the previous year - according to Holly McNulty of Farm Sanctuary, an organization that takes in abused or abandoned animals.
Individuals sent $15 per turkey to help feed the birds. Each sponsor got a photo and a bio of their turkey. Domesticated turkeys can't survive in the wild; they've been bred to grow rapidly, causing weight problems and making them unable to fly. The turkey rescue program will be repeated in November.
