The Many Faces of Early Peru

July 28, 1997

Most people think only of the Incas when they think of ancient Peru. But "The Spirit of Ancient Peru," at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum of San Francisco, features the work of 10 other cultures as well. On view until Aug. 31, the exhibit brings together 175 masterworks from Lima. Examples of pottery, gold and silver work, textiles, and carvings of wood, bone, and stone span more than 2,000 years. The objects, many from grave sites, attest to the Indians' belief in an afterlife and the transitional nature of earthly existence. The show moves to the Knoxville, Tenn., Museum of Art in late September.
