The news from El Salvador used to be misery, assassination, and civil war that took 75,000 lives. Now it's four years since a UN-brokered peace overtook the death squads, and the Central American republic has become a model of third-world progress toward democracy and economic stability. It was singled out as such at last month's annual meeting of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
