Civilized Record-Breaking

October 9, 1996

Fresh from American baseball, which has lapsed from spitballs to spit-at-the-umpire, we can't explain cricket, a game that "civilizes people," as an African leader put it. But we must report that a teenager from Pakistan, Shahid Afridi, has broken the world's one-day scoring record with more than 100 runs (against Sri Lanka). "I just wanted to be useful to the team," said Afridi. So much for that former Archbishop of Canterbury who called cricket "organized loafing."
