Helmsmanship

May 10, 1996

Of the many strange things in the daily news, one of the strangest was the report the other day that former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has given $1,000 to Sen. Jesse Helms's campaign for reelection to the Senate.

Senator Helms may be the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, but he's also on record as opposing just about everything Mr. Kissinger ever stood for and the appointment of anyone ever associated with the former secretary. Just what element of Helms's worldview does Kissinger find attractive: The North Carolinian's opposition to controlling nuclear and chemical weapons? Or perhaps his solitary support of the Argentine dictators against Britain during the Falklands' War?

Just curious....
