Czanne Retrospective To Make Final Stop in Philadelphia

Though often grouped with Post-Impressionists, French painter Paul Czanne defies categorization. His works, credited with helping to bridge 19th-century movements to 20th-century modernism, vary in color and brush stroke; among the subjects are landscapes, still lifes, and family. The first major survey in 60 years of Czanne's groundbreaking work has been shown in London and Paris, and it will make its only American stop at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The exhibition begins May 30 and ends Sept. 1. Of the more than 100 oil paintings and some 70 watercolors and drawings is this oil, 'Portrait of Gustave Geffroy, 1895-96.' The show was organized by the Philadelphia museum, the Muse d'Orsay in Paris, and the Tate Gallery in London.
