David Hockney's High-Octane Art Car

March 11, 1996

The British-born, Los Angeles-based artist spent 2-1/2 days painting this BMW 850CSi. Hockney says he played off of the car's contours in shaping his design. 'Traveling in a car means experiencing landscapes, which is one of the reasons why I chose green as a predominant color.' He opened a retrospective of his drawings at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art last month. The BMW Art Cars were started in 1975. Other artists have included Calder, Lichtenstein, and Warhol.
