Independence in Taiwan

December 9, 1994

Taiwan's population underlined its penchant for prudence by voting for stability (recently).... Claims, more wistful than honest, were being advanced that the tectonic plates of Taiwanese politics were changing inexorably in favor of independence. However, advocates of that controversial and dangerous path were shown to be in a minority....

The bottom line of prudence is the idea that if something is working well, it is unnecessary to change it. Whatever their feelings over particular irritants in relations with China, a majority of Taiwanese showed clearly that they were not willing to take chances with their destiny.
