Amsterdam

April 13, 1993

Like the houses of Amsterdam looking firmly shored but ready to float out all their household goods and gods on moving boats every first of May, I am ready, if not to float, to let you float. Exits are easy. Walk down the stone steps to the barge. Look. Central beams, the bearing beams, jut out of every house unexpected perches for gulls, but built to hoist all furniture. Like these houses some of us are equipped although not anxious, or even willing, but equipped for moving.
