AMERICA'S "BIGGEST POLLUTERS"

Cargill, DuPont, General Electric, General Motors, Georgia-Pacific, MAXXAM, Rockwell, and USX have the worst environmental records in their industries, according to the Council on Economic Priorities (CEP).

Cargill, one of the world's largest grain traders and meat packers, had nearly three times as many air-permit violations as other food product companies, notes a recent report by the CEP, a research firm that tracks environmental records of major US corporations.

Last year Gov. Bill Clinton criticized Cargill and other livestock producers for dumping animal wastes comparable to the output of 21 million people into Arkansas rivers, the CEP says.

DuPont is the world's largest producer of ozone-destroying CFCs, the report adds.
