Ready for Discovery

December 10, 1992

They were always ready to be discovered: the "Flower of the Holy Night" in scarlet bloom at Christmas season, named for Poinsett, and brought with him on his return from Mexico; the brilliant blossoming shrub a French navigator found in the tropics, that afterward, wore his name: De Bougainville; the delicate yellow flower blooming in winter snow, so much in haste that it outraced its leaves, brought home from China to share the name of its bearer: Forsyth. And everywhere, there still may be discoveries without acclaim, waiting till some one stakes a claim: waiting, waiting for a name.
