December 9, 1992

Shoplifting increased 18 percent between 1987 and 1991, according to the FBI Crime Index.

It continues to be one of the fastest growing crimes in the FBI's larceny-theft category. Hardest hit, as a percentage of their sales, are apparel specialty stores, drug stores, convenience stores, and department stores, the National Retail Federation reports.
