Winter in Wyoming

November 5, 1992

In November the roads close and the mountains and black hills, "Paha Sepa" "black with pine" turn pale. The Lakota Sioux country of spruce and aspen belongs again to antelope, sleeping bear, and elk. Plumes of mist at Medicine Bow rise like eagles over the evergreen, like smoke from Indians long decamped while you lie in a warm bed in a silver studded dream of white mountains white rabbits and white doe.
