Which cities are leading candidates to host the summer Games in the year 2000?

Bejing, Sydney, Istanbul, Berlin, and Manchester, England. The International Olympic Committee will announce its decision in September 1993. Bejing's lobbyists promise that "a more open China awaits" the Olympics, but the country's human-rights record may jeopardize its chances. Sydney is touting its ability to bring all the athletes together in one place (some sports competitions traditionally have to be held far from the host city). Manchester recently added credibility to its bid by receiving the fina ncial support of Prime Minister John Major and the British government. Istanbul bills itself as the place where two continents meet: Europe and Asia. Berlin, meanwhile, promotes itself as the city that embodies the Olympic peacemaking ideal.
