ANC SUPPORTERS MARCH, DEMAND INTERIM RULE

African National Congress (ANC) President Nelson Mandela led 50,000 supporters in a march on the capital today to demand the speedy installation of a multiracial interim government.

Millions of blacks returned to work today after a related two-day strike that was deemed a "resounding victory" by the ANC. The South African Chamber of Business said the strike cost the economy $90 million, mostly in lost wages for blacks.

The ANC launched a mass-action campaign in June when it broke off black-white negotiations to protest growing political violence.
