PRETORIA SEEKS MEETING WITH ANC

June 23, 1992

The African National Congress (ANC) canceled today's round of black-white political talks, and President Frederik de Klerk cut short a trip to Spain to return home and deal with the growing crisis.

Foreign Minister Roelof (Pik) Botha, the acting leader in Mr. De Klerk's absence, said the government was seeking an urgent meeting with the ANC.

ANC leader Nelson Mandela broke off interracial negotiations with the white government Sunday, accusing the government of responsibility for a massacre in a black township last week that left at least 39 people dead.

Other groups in the multiparty talks agreed to a postponement, and no new date was announced.

ANC leaders will meet today to decide whether to press ahead with negotiations or focus their efforts on a national protest campaign.
