MARIYA KOVALEVA, her husband, Vadim, and son Viktor, came from Ukraine to Portland, Ore., last January. They are Pentecostal Christians. Mariya will soon start English classes at a community college:

"It was very hard living in Ukraine. There was no food in the stores, we were on rations, and there was a lot of looting and fighting. Also, we felt like we couldn't practice our faith because people discriminated against us. We really like it in the United States.
