Total cash compensation for outside directors at the nation's 100 largest industrial corporations averaged 17 percent higher than compensation for their counterparts at 100 service corporations.

Of 200 companies surveyed by Handy HRM Corporation, a consulting firm, outside directors at industrial companies were paid an average of $42,935 in 1990, while their peers at service firms received $36,827.
