INHERITANCE DILEMMAS

November 15, 1991

Does one still work after coming into a windfall inheritance? Of those whose assets are already over $1 million, 55 percent would continue their work pattern. But of those with assets of less than $500,000, 63 percent would work less, according to a survey of Americans likely to give or receive a bequest. Neuberger & Berman, an investment firm, sponsored the study.Almost two-thirds of potential givers put their own needs strongly ahead of their desire to pass money along, but 35 percent said they were willing to sacrifice retirement comfort to provide an inheritance. A majority said it was wise to communicate their plans to family members once decisions were made, as this would help avert later controversy. Some 39 percent frowned on giving money before a child has embarked on a career.
