Canada remains the world's largest user of gold for coinage, consuming 1 million ounces in 1990, according to the Gold Institute. The United States ranks second (580,000 ounces), followed by Austria (550,000 ounces) and Australia (510,000 ounces).In 1990, 4.1 million ounces of gold were used in coins worldwide, down about 900,000 ounces from 1989.
