October's Children

POEMS OF AUTUMN

October 16, 1991

Late afternoon October sun Caresses small brown heads And holds them golden, shining Against the falling leaves.

Indian summer's benevolent glow Glints on two spoons busily working. Enhances the importance Of watermelon eating.

Small faces and ineffable delight Mingle with the essence of childhood. I see the varied elements of sun and afternoon Meeting with their innocence and gladness.

And now all things fall into place And I have strength for everything, For I have felt the warmth of afternoon sun, And I have seen the purity of October's children.
