UN TEAM EXTENDS BAGHDAD STAY

July 12, 1991

Members of a United Nations inspection team will stay in Baghdad another week for further checks on Iraq's nuclear equipment, a UN official said yesterday.Allistair Livingston, field operations chief of the UN committee supervising the scrapping of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, said 28 of the 37-member team from the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency would stay on in Baghdad "to evaluate additional information." The team arrived in Baghdad last weekend and had planned to stay a week to look for evidence of a secret nuclear weapons program after Iraq blocked earlier attempts to inspect its nuclear facilities. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein disclosed details of a uraniam-enrichment program Sunday, but said it was for peaceful purposes. The United States said it showed Iraq was capable of producing atomic weapons.
