CUNY STUDENTS CONTINUE PROTEST OF CUOMO BUDGET

April 16, 1991

Administrators of the City University of New York (CUNY) reportedly have toughened their response to week-old tuition protests, even as more students joined the demonstrations yesterday. At least 37 students involved in the protests against tuition hikes and budget cuts have been suspended for obstructing access to university buildings.

Classes were canceled last week at City College, Borough of Manhattan Community College, and Hostos Community College. Students continued to occupy buildings at Hunter College, Lehman College, and Bronx Community College.

Students are protesting a $500 tuition increase and $92 million in budget cuts that would be required by Gov. Mario Cuomo's new budget.
