Turkey To Permit US Use of Base

January 18, 1991

The Turkish government has asked Parliament to allow the Turkish Armed Forces, now on alert along Turkey's border with Iraq, to join the war in case of Iraqi aggression, reports Sam Cohen in Ankara. US bombers and fighters are at Incirlik air base in southern Turkey, but Prime Minister Yildirim Akbulut said yesterday the planes had not taken part in operations against Iraq. He said Parliament has been asked to approve the use of the base by the US.

Parliamentary approval was expected.
