CHICAGO CHURCH SAVED FROM WRECKING BALL

January 3, 1991

Holy Family Church, the ``Ellis Island of the Midwest'' and one of only five public buildings that survived the 1871 Chicago Fire, has defeated the wrecker's ball. Supporters scrambled for two days to raise the last of $1 million needed to start restoration work. At a news conference on the steps of the 130-year-old Victorian Gothic structure Tuesday, officials said they raised more than $2 million.
