CAPE VERDE TO TRY MULTIPARTY RULE

Cape Verde has joined the pro-democracy trend sweeping Africa by scrapping one-party rule, which had been in force since independence from Portugal in 1975. The National Assembly of the island republic abolished the monopoly of the ruling party and called elections for next January.
