LOS ANGELES DRUG TRIAL ENDS

August 8, 1990

The trial of four alleged Mexican narcotics smugglers has ended without the United States being able to convince a jury that any of them was guilty of murdering Enrique Camarena, a top US undercover drug agents. The final verdict in the three-month-long trial, which has strained relations between the US and Mexico, was returned by the jury Monday. They found Javier Vasquez Velasco guilty in the murder of two Americans shot in the belief they were federal drug agents.

Although Vasquez was not charged with Camarena's murder, federal Judge Edward Rafeedie told the jury they could link the other two killings with that of the US agent.
