COLLEGES ENROLL MORE STUDENTS

July 9, 1990

A record 60 percent of the high school graduates of 1989 were enrolled in college in October, according to a Labor Department study. About four in 10 of these 2.5 million new college students held jobs as well. Nearly 450,000 youths dropped out of high school between October 1988 and 1989, about half as many as in the peak year of 1978. The decline reflects both a decline in the teenage population and a slight increase in high school retention rates.
