Miami Dawn Florida

June 5, 1990

Miami dreams cool dreams Beneath warming sun As I ride my bicycle Down deserted streets, Hearing a black cat Tufted with white Mew his hunger in early light. A homeless man sleeping Under a bridge stirs, stretches, Looking blankly at me, Then smiling as the cat Rubs against his faded sneakers. Together they search For morning meal. He finds on the ground A wrinkled bill I left for him And looks quizzically after me. Although I am no longer there, I include him and his friends In my morning prayer.
