HOW HAPPY ARE WORKERS IN US?

May 25, 1990

Most Americans are satisfied with their jobs, yet 51 percent would choose a different line of work if they had the opportunity to do it over again, according to survey results from Accountants on Call. Forty-six percent of employees were ``very satisfied'' with their jobs, while 41 percent were ``somewhat satisfied.''

AOC also found that job satisfaction increases with age: 36 percent of Americans between 18 and 29 years old were ``very satisfied,'' 48 percent of 40- to 49-year-olds were, and 62 percent of those aged 50 and upward were.

Nearly all (96 percent) thought that having good chances for promotion is an essential or important aspect of a job.

Four workers in 10 said their bosses always run things efficiently, recognize a job well done, encourage suggestions, and listen to their problems and concerns. Another 30 percent said their bosses do those things most of the time.
