ETHNIC RIOTS RESURGE IN UZBEKISTAN

A new wave of ethnic violence erupted Saturday in the Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan and an undetermined number of people were killed and injured, a Soviet newspaper and a local television correspondent reported. Central Asia has been one of the focal points of ethnic unrest which has rocked Soviet republics over past two years and threatened to compromise Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's reform program.

At least 110 people were killed last June in Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley when Uzbeks attacked ethnic Turks in their homes and on the streets.
