EC REJECTS TURKISH MEMBERSHIP

December 20, 1989

The European Community's executive body Monday said Turkey should not be allowed to join the trading bloc, citing improvements needed in its economy and human rights record. But the EC Commission recommended strengthening cooperation between the 12-nation trading bloc and Turkey in the next few years to pave the way for membership.

The EC's executive body has been considering the implications of Turkish membership since Ankara applied to join the Community in 1987.
