EAST GERMANS GRILL RULING COMMUNISTS

October 31, 1989

After weeks of demonstrations on East German city streets, the country's embattled communist leaders organized their own rallies this weekend only to face a grilling by disgruntled citizens demanding reforms. The state-controlled television news reported extensively on the rallies attended by tens of thousands of people Sunday in East Berlin, Karl-Marx-Stadt, and Leipzig.

At the rallies, communist hard-liners-turned-reformists were grilled by participants, with many demanding more democratic freedoms, controls on the security police, and an end to official privileges.
