HOUSE COMMITTEE SEEKS AID HIKE FOR EAST BLOC

October 13, 1989

The House Foreign Affairs Committee is pressing an $837.5 million aid plan for Poland and Hungary, nearly double the assistance proposed by President Bush, to foster change toward democracy and open markets. The committee endorsed the package 35 to 0 on Wednesday, choosing a middle road between Bush's $455.5 million proposal and the $1.2 billion urged by Senate Democrats.
