DALAI LAMA WINS PEACE PRIZE

The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual and political leader of Tibet, won the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize yesterday for shunning violence in seeking liberation from China. Last year the Dalai Lama proposed a compromise for ending China's 29-year occupation of his homeland, offering to keep Tibet as an autonomous Chinese territory and to relinquish control of foreign affairs to Beijing.
